Mecha, is a niche genre in the western culture. While in Japan it has had its peaks, fall offs and Renaissances. Ill start with a brief history. The first Mecha to be animated was Gigantor, the robot was controlled by a twelve year old boy. This started the trend of most Mecha series featuring a young protagonist and the robot being a symbol of power. A twelve year old himself can't do much, but with a giant robot on his side...
The first piloted Mecha was Mazinger Z, I haven't delved into this series at all but it was the predecessor to the series I hold near and dear. That is Gundam.
Gundam was the first "Real Robot" show, where they depicted the Mecha as machines of war. They weren't super heros, with special moves where they defeated the agents of evil with the power of good. Gundam, and the "Mobile Suits" were analogs for tanks and fighter jets. The Mobile Suits themselves were a symbol for the change in warfare, technology always pushing it forward. While the Gundam was created to be "The end of all war." It was supposed to be so powerful that no one could stand against it, and it would make war irrelevant.
